How Two Lottery Winners Stayed Grounded

It's nearing the weekend and the top three highest paying jackpots on offer have all gone yet another draw without producing a winner. There have been many lottery winners from every walk of life from those who were living below the breadline to those who have lived from paycheck to paycheck. What separates them is the discipline they show when they have won. Stories of lottery winners who have squandered all their winnings by living life in the fast lane, to those who have lost it all on bad investments may be common, however, there are the exceptions.

Sarah Cockings

Sarah was still a student at university studying social sciences when she won her share of the lottery jackpot in April 2005 at the tender age of 21.. £3,045,705 richer, she purchased her parents a new home as well as treating herself to a few high-end cars and luxury hotels. Sarah is not terribly shy to admit that she had set aside some of her earnings for breast augmentation, not for herself, but for her two sisters, Alex and Emma Cockings.

Sarah did not, however, lose herself in the high life and has since gone back to university to complete her degree. Today, the 31-year-old is a full-time mother and lives in Morpeth with her partner and two-year-old son - expecting another addition to the family.

She said: “I’ve got a really close knit family and my win wasn’t just for me but also for my family. As well as some of the more fun things I’ve bought, I’m also really lucky to be able to be a stay at home mum as that is a real luxury these days.”

Malcolm Wilkins

In January 2002, Malcolm Wilkins became the lucky recipient of a massive £10,166,103 windfall. Before ever spending any of his jackpot on himself, he offered financial aid to his family. An avid fisherman, Malcolm was a council maintenance worker when he came into his wealth. Not keen on being a martyr, he enjoyed his fair share of the good life purchasing sports cars as well as having been on nearly thirty cruises. These days, however, he is more settled down and is content driving around in his Range Rover.

“Family came first for me when I won so I made sure my sister and brother were settled before I treated myself," said Malcolm. "I love traveling and winning has enabled me to see and experience so much of the world that I would never think possible.”
