Jason and Victoria Jones seemed to be the typical happy couple when they won £2.3million in 2004 just one month into their marriage. The ticket which they purchased with the last coin in Victoria's purse was described by they couple as having "ruined their lives." The Jones' even go as far as to say that they wish they had never won.
It has been over a decade since they Victoria became £2.3million and the couple looks back on those years with deep regret. They purchased a luxury home as well as an expensive sports car and together, invested in property in Devizes, Wiltshire. Along the way, Victoria had formed a partnership with successful entrepreneur, Mike Clare, who was in the retailing industry selling has since sold Dreams for £222million in 2008.Victoria is now a successful property business woman but claims that the lottery win was "one of the worst things that's ever happened to me. The stress it gives you in life and even 12 years down the line, I’m still classed as a lottery winner and it’s horrible. It ruins your life. People treat you differently – it’s just not a nice thing," she added.
Lara and Robert Griffith
Sadly, the couple's story is nothing new to lottery winners who have split from their spouses. Those close to the Griffith family have indicated that even before the lottery success, the couple has had more than their fair share of marital issues. Lara and Robert came into a lovely $2.75 million windfall and although one would think that the newly acquired wealth would help fix a few of their problems, ironically the riches caused even more!
Both parties squandered away their riches. While Mr. Griffith purchased a high-end car, Mrs. Griffith splurged her cash on designer clothing. The couple bought a mansion, although that phase would not last terribly long. Lara accused her husband of infidelity and in a fit of rage, Robert sped off and the couple would never be the same. Today, Robert lives with his parents from whom he gets his allowance.
As with many lottery winners, they are often encouraged to seek financial advice. However, with the real possibility of new money opening up vulnerable areas in a marriage, young couples should also take seeking marital advice from councilors just as seriously. You don't have to learn from your own mistakes, that's what other people's errors are for.
